The Bowen Pipeline restores the water table and rivers by eliminating the need for drawing upon underground water reserves.
Sustainability
We understand how important this pipeline is, and the impact it will have on not only the state of Queensland, but people and families all around the Asia Pacific region. That’s why we are doing all we can to minimise the risks to the environment and surrounds, whilst maximising the potential benefits to the wider communities.
We take the opportunity very seriously and seek to promote a sustainable process in which both the environment and industry can flourish in prosperity. The pipeline minimises impacts on its surrounds by constructing within state-owned land directly alongside the Bruce Highway and rail infrastructure as well as smaller sections of cleared private land adjoining the Highway. By utilising these ‘brownfield’ areas, we are able to avoid disturbance to valued greenfield sites for the benefit of local flora, fauna and farmers.
The pipeline will provide both local and international markets with access to safe, high-quality, nutritious fruit and vegetables that are grown and nurtured within the beautiful Bowen surrounds.
We intend to utilise the most up-to-date water supply technology, which will reduce our carbon footprint throughout the process. All water users will be required to implement approved Land and Water Management Plans, providing a significant opportunity to implement soil sediment, potassium, nitrogen and pesticide reduction strategies by all operators. Unrestricted flood irrigation will not be permitted. The LWMPs will contribute toward achieving the Reef 2050 Water Quality Improvement Plan targets for the Burdekin Region.
Increasing productivity of existing cleared land reduces the need for further land clearing and protects existing habitats for local flora and fauna. With a reduced reliance on bore water, the salinity of the region’s water table will be substantially limited.
Importantly the project restores the water table and our rivers by eliminating the need for drawing upon underground water reserves. This will reduce salinity issues, prevents run-off into our waterways and strengthens protections for the Great Barrier Reef.
